Over 14 years I've attended the Victoria College of Art, studied painting, taught coloured pencil, multi-media and acrylics, and taken house portrait commissions. I paint on site or from my photography, and keep a sketch journal. I don't think a subject is interesting until it has been around long enough to acquire some character. Last year I showed acrylic paintings of leaves, digitizing close-up photographs and, using photo enhancement filters to their extremes, distorting them until they were interesting references. To paint from that product is to step outside Nature's boundaries. And the resulting painting is another step beyond that.

After spending a year of self-study in Europe, concentrating on master artists and architecture, and completing her Bachelor of Arts Degree at the University of Alberta, Canadian artist Adelle Andrew decided to put her brush to canvas.

In her exciting new Cryptic Muse Series, somewhat imaginary structures with architectural connotations and highly textured surfaces reveal a third dimension to create the illusion of mass and volume which increases the tactile sense of her work.

Adelle’s paintings can be found in Canadian museums, foundations and many corporate and private collections.  Adelle enjoys the fact that she is now a full time artist working at her studio in Victoria, B.C.  She is an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and the Alberta Society of Artists.  Adelle is represented by the Avenue Gallery, Oak Bay, Victoria, and Jacana Art Gallery, Vancouver.

I've worked in concrete for twenty years, in turn coaxing and cajoling it into shapes from my own molds. Since moving to Victoria in 2001 I've enjoyed creating outdoor garden sculpture. I've learned how to add concrete to wire screen so I can bend shapes to create outdoor sculpture. I'm always amazed by the variety of shapes I've created and how concrete, once coloured takes on the appearance of stone, leather, or even plastic. I've also recently started a series of paintings, inspired by the Canadian artist Paterson Ewen, to transform plywood that initially is routered into a painting that offers an additional dimension for the artist. I like to use the same 'sleight of hand' technique in this medium to transfrom the lowly wood, into art by adding surface finishes that add lustre, depth and richness.

Come visit my latest series of paintings, Fragile Entanglements, which explores the delicate co-existence of ecosystems. Using acrylics on large canvas, I build watery layers of fluid colour and superimpose intricate patterns to represent nature’s delicate detail. The resulting abstractions are interwoven, interdependent environments.

Jane Dillon Davis has been exploring the creative possibilities of textiles for over twenty years. With a background in Art and Design, she initially worked with such traditional techniques as quilting, appliqué, and hand and machine embroidery to create large quilted wall hangings, which she exhibited and sold in the Edmonton area. In the past decade, she has refined a process combining silk collage and machine embroidery, believing that these techniques, along with the range and versatility of textiles available today, have enriched her work with added depth and perspective.

Her mission is to create pottery that is practical for every day use and pleasing to look at. She has worked full time as a potter since retiring from high school teaching and counselling in Toronto, and over the years has studied with many fine potters around Canada and the United States. She has recently made her home in Victoria and established her new home- based studio. She is continuing to make her lines of household wares while experimenting with new shapes and colours in her new warmer city where she takes great pleasure in being able to see the ocean every day. My painting is an autobiograpical comment on the way I experience and understand my mental and physical environment. I use various media as I am constantly searching for the clearest way to express myself. I embed my personal symbolic language in a matrix of marks and colours. Beside my abstract work I also paint portraints in oils.

I have a BFA from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. I am a member of Collective Works Gallery and have sold work privately across Canada and in the USA. On display will be recent work in encaustic. I am attracted to the physical presence of the medium. The thick luminosity of the wax has almost a sculptural feel to it. In these new pieces I explore techniques of carving, scraping, painting, dripping and collage; all with thick and thin layers of wax.

Also on display are a number of small collages. I have cut up old unfinished paintings that didn’t come together as a whole but had exciting elements within, and used them as a background. The foreground is made up of cut up watercolour images of children, birds and fruit. I enjoy the tension and mystery created by the contrast of the large-scale foreboding background and the simple almost cartoon like watercolour elements.

Painting for me is about play and exploration. I enjoy working with acrylics, mixed media and watercolour. My creations all depend on the kind of day I'm having - sometimes a minimalist prairie landscape will appear or a burst of colourful abstract flowers. The process is about imagination, vision, inspiration and a good sprinkling of joy.

My love of nature began in Thunder Bay Ontario, where I was born and raised...however my desire to paint only started in the early "90's, when I persuded my dream, and attended a watercolor class, and then it began! Since then I have attended many watercolor classes, as well as Chinese Brush Painting and Acrylic classes and workshops, and from these many techniques, I have developed my own style of painting, mostly nature.  Some of my paintings and cards have gone overseas, and in the Spring I delightfully join in the "Fairfield Artists Studio Tour".

I was a successful jewelery designer in Vancouver before moving to Salt Spring Island. I am a self-taught artist and began my exploration of various mediums at this time. I also painted in San Miguel de Allende for 7 months. In Victoria 2002, I took up oil painting for the first time. I fell in love with this rich, forgiving and luminous medium.

I seem to be split in two, between the extroverted bright colours and people of Mexico and my contemplative, subdued side communing with close up images of nature.  I either dance to Salsa or listen to Buddhist teachings while I work.

My encaustic mixed media work is an intuitive reflection of the world I see be it natural or man-made. It is sometimes architectural, sometimes organic but is always a visceral interpretation of colour, texture and light and how these elements affect the memories of my experiences. Working in wax is a daily lesson in staying fluid and flexible. The medium of wax simply cannot be completely controlled.  The unpredictable quality of the paint demands that you work with change as each piece progresses and not with a preconceived idea of the finished work.  Photography is more and more becoming a support to my paintings as I abstract important images. I still find satisfaction in the capturing of the perfect light in a garden, or shadow on a wall. And managing to catch a spontaneous image of a child just “being a child” is one of my greatest joys.

I became interested in stained glass after watching a piece being made to completion. It was years later that I had the opportunity to try my hand at it. I moved to a remote area of Vancouver Island with plenty of time, a "how to" book and all the tools to get started. I've been working in this art form now for 18 years and continue to love every aspect of it. I create my own patterns and especially enjoy the whimsical abstracts as they are open to everyones own interpretation. I now live in Courtenay where I have a great little studio to work in. My glass is on display here and I would welcome a visit from you.

Matthew Wolferstan’s representational watercolours are of local scenes familiar to any who know and love Victoria, and B.C.’s coastal waters. Born and raised in Victoria, Wolferstan gives an “insider’s” look at the area, through his paintings. His watercolours are very precise, with close attention to detail, while still maintaining a feel for the subject and overall mood of the piece. Mostly self-taught, Wolferstan’s formal training includes one year at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver, instruction in portrait painting in oils with local portraitist David Goatley, and plein air studies, in Italy, with British watercolourist Alan Reed.
