After sketching the basic image, Karen applies Schmincke Soft Pastels directly to
BFK Rives paper. Karen then manipulates the pastel using her hands –  no brushes, water or masking techniques are used in the process.

Schmincke pastels contain the finest quality and highest concentration of pigments.The pigments are carefully ground on extra-hard stone-mills to replicate the traditional hand grinding process. Each pastel is carefully formed and labeled by hand.

BFK Rives are mould-made, acid free (100% cotton), general purpose printmaking papers known for their buffered, smooth surface. Arches papers offer conservation quality symbolized by the sign of infinity in the registered watermark and deckle edges.

Karen’s pastel collection includes over 350 different colours.
