Since 2002, Karen has been painting solely with pastel sticks on heavy print-making paper. This medium combination restricts the size of the original and it needs to be displayed under glass, so not to disturb the pastel. Over the past ten years, Karen has been frequently asked by clients to create her trees on a larger scale and on traditional canvas -- in other words, a finished piece that requires no framing, no glass.
In October 2009 Karen began to experiment with pastel and canvas. In December 2009, she completed her first pastel and resin on traditional deep exhibition canvas, "Tree IV".

Karen wraps her image around
all four sides of the canvas.

Karen uses a similar process when creating her canvas originals as she does with pastel on paper, with the exception of the resin. She sketches out her image onto the canvas, applies the pastel sticks, manipulating the colour with her hands, then paints on a transparent resin. The resin completely coats and protects the pastel. When dried, she attaches hanging hardware to the backside ready to hang.
